Movie Ratings Explained

1 min read

Age ratings help families choose films that suit their children. Different countries use different systems, so it helps to know the basics.

United States (MPA)

  • G: General audiences, suitable for all ages.
  • PG: Parental guidance suggested. Some material may not suit young children.
  • PG-13: Parents are strongly cautioned, as some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
  • R and NC-17: Restricted to adults or older teens.

United Kingdom (BBFC)

  • U: Universal, suitable for all ages.
  • PG: Parental guidance. Generally suitable for ages eight and over, though some scenes may upset younger children.
  • 12A: Cinema viewing for ages 12 and over, or younger children accompanied by an adult.
  • 12, 15, and 18: Age-restricted ratings for home viewing and cinema.

Look Beyond the Letter

A rating is a starting point. Two PG films can be very different. Most rating bodies publish short reasons for each rating, such as “mild threat” or “mild peril”. These explain what to expect.

Tips for Parents

  • Read the rating reasons before you choose.
  • Use a parent guide website for scene-by-scene detail.
  • Remember that every child is different. Some are sensitive to scary scenes, while others are not.
  • Watch together and pause to talk about anything unsettling.

Choosing well means everyone enjoys the film.
