DIY Movie Night T-Shirts

A simple craft for a family that loves movies.

Matching shirts make movie night feel like an occasion. This craft uses plain shirts and fabric pens, and children of most ages can join in with adult help.

What you need

  • Plain cotton T-shirts, washed and dried.
  • Fabric pens or fabric paint and brushes.
  • Cardboard to place inside each shirt so the color does not soak through.
  • Paper and pencil for sketching designs.
  • Masking tape to hold the fabric flat.

Steps

  • Sketch your design on paper first. A film strip border, a popcorn box, or a favorite character all work well.
  • Slide the cardboard inside the shirt and smooth the fabric flat.
  • Lightly draw the outline with pencil, then color it in with the pens or paint.
  • Let the shirt dry completely, following the instructions on the pens or paint.
  • Check the label to see how to set the color, which may involve ironing, and ask an adult to help.

Ideas

  • Give each family member a movie job title, such as director, sound chief, or snack manager.
  • Design a family movie club logo.
  • Make a different shirt for each film genre.

Wash the shirts inside out and follow the care instructions on the pens or paint. Always supervise young children around paints and irons.
